Gurez Valley is one of the most picturesque offbeat places of Kashmir — what does winter bring to this place? For those wanting to go on an adventure in the Gurez Valley in winter or just wondering if it is open in the winter months, this guide tells you the truth.
The succinct answer is — during winter, the Razdan Pass (the sole road that connects Gurez Valley to the rest of Kashmir) is closed by heavy snowfall and makes much of the valley very inaccessible. For those who can make the trip in the shoulder months, however, it's a magical experience.
At Ozzo Kashmir Holidays, we assist travellers in planning Gurez trips during all seasons of the year and this guide covers all the essentials for planning any winter or late autumn trip.
A list of events taking place during the winter in Gurez Valley.
The snowfall in the Gurez Valley is very heavy from November till April.
The snowfall in the Gurez Valley is very heavy from November till April. Below several feet of snow the Razdan Pass (3,450 metres) which is the only road route into the valley, is closed, leaving the valley cut off from Srinagar and the rest of Kashmir.
During these months:
- The main road via Razdan Pass is completely closed
- There will be no tourist vehicles coming in and out of the valley.
- There are two choices for local residents: They can remain in the valley or move to lower elevations before the snow arrives.
- The mobile connectivity is restricted and nearly unavailable.
- At night a drop in temperature to minus 15°C to minus 20°C.
You can't relax in December or January in this place. Gurez is not a place for the uninformed traveller who doesn't know what's going on in the area, even in the middle of the summer.
Is Gurez Valley Accessible during Winter?
Actually, not until most of the winter season.
| Month | Accessibility | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| September and October | Partially open | Road may close mid to late October |
| First heavy snow at Razdan Pass November | Mostly closed | |
| December | Closed fully | No access to the road, deep snow |
| February | Closed 100% | Very cold, valley cut off. |
| February | Closed - Snowbound - NO TOURIST ACCESS | |
| April | Closed in most places/ mostly closed/ Road starts opening up towards end of April | |
| The opening phase will be in April | with the road opening probably late April if there is snowfall. | |
| June | Open, but blocked by the valley May be reopened for tourists. | |
| July | Open, but blocked by the valley May be reopened for tourists. |
For a wintery, but still accessible, scene for Gurez, you should shoot during late October before the pass closes or early May just after it reopens. Both windows provide snow-covered settings, but not a full road closure like you get with other windows.
What makes Autumn Gurez so special?
Though deep winter times are not available, September and October in Gurez valley are truly spectacular and underrated.
Fall foliage: All trees throughout the valley turn to golden, orange, and red. October often has a more dramatic scene than the summer months when the snow starts to fall on the higher summits.
Less crowd: By October most Kashmir tourists have departed. In autumn, the village of Gurez is virtually deserted — you have a whole meadow, a whole river track to yourself.
Crisp clean air: Cooler and more comfortable walking and photographing conditions. The days are sunny and bright, nights are cold, but warm enough with proper clothing.
The photography window is best when the trees are all in autumn colors, early snow cover on Habba Khatoon Peak and the Kishanganga River at lower levels.
Gurez Valley – a worthwhile winter getaway?
Yes, for a few days in the late October it is indeed one of the most beautiful and peaceful things Kashmir has to offer. The valley is literally off-limits for tourists during November to April and it is indeed risky to try to be there.
I'd like to be honest here:
Worth visiting if:
- You are planning in late October, prior to the close of the pass.
- Love fall foliage and first snow, but not the summer crowds!
- You have extensive travel experience and are able to handle an off-the-grid experience.
- Willing to be flexible and adjust plans for weather
Not recommended if:
- You are in planning mode for December – March.
- You would expect to have the same facilities and accessibility as summer.Accessibility and facilities as summer.
- You are traveling with your kids or old parents!
- You are returning on a specific date and will not be able to leave earlier.
Before heading out on an edge trip in the winter, here are some things to consider.
Before leaving Srinagar, make sure to check about the condition of the roads.
Razdan Pass may still close in October due to unexpected snowfall. Please check road conditions from the local authorities or the travel agent before leaving Srinagar.
Carry warm clothing
Bring thermal layers, a heavy jacket, warm socks and gloves even in October.
Cash is essential
Gurez does not have any ATMs. Before entering the valley, withdraw adequate amount of cash from Srinagar or Bandipora.
There is very little accommodation during the late season.
After September, many guesthouses at Gurez start to close. Always book an accommodation ahead of time from a reliable booking agency such as the booking agent of Ozzo Kashmir Holidays and confirm availability of the property.
Inner Line Permit is still required
There is no seasonal variation in the permit requirement. Please book Inner Line Permits in advance via your travel agent.

Conclusion
Gurez Valley in winter is largely a closed chapter — the Razdan Pass shuts, the road disappears under snow, and the valley returns to its quiet, self-sufficient rhythm until spring. But the edges of winter — particularly late October — offer one of Kashmir's most rewarding and least visited travel experiences.
If you want snow-dusted peaks, golden autumn forests, an empty valley, and the Kishanganga River to yourself, plan your Gurez trip for October. Just plan carefully, stay flexible, and travel with people who know the valley well.
